Results & Winners of Blitz Compettition
Posted by rathmineschessclub in Uncategorized on March 26, 2009
Thanks again to John Crowley for running the blitz competition. The quick turnaround between rounds could not have been achieved without his trusty laptop and usual efficiency. With 16 players on the last night, there was plenty of work to be done.
Killian Delaney was the outstanding player over the three rounds. His total score of 26.5/27 (just one draw conceded over 27 games!) is a testament to just how strong and consistent he is over the 5-minute format. Kudos to Thomas Gruel for taking that one half-point off Killian!
Second overall was John Crowley with a more-than-decent 19 points, but because he was in the senior section with Killian he receives no prize.
Winner of the second section is the ever-combative and strong blitz player Atanas Khoutev, on 16.5 points. James Osbourne won the junior section with 11 points overall.
On the night, the strongest threat to Killian’s dominance came from Sam Osbourne and Jack Killane. Jack was a rook up with a completely won game until he lost on time. But that’s blitz. I didn’t witness Sam’s game against Killian, but he lost in the end. Myself, Tony, can normally play a decent fast game, but was completely trounced on the night and trailed in on 3 points.

We are closed for St. Patrick’s Day, Tuesday, March 17th 2009.
The committee have decided to enter one team into the Branagan Cup this year – players who played on the Armstrong or Heidenfeld leagues are entitled to enter, we need a team of five and a panel of eight. Jack Killane will be the captain and invites players to contact him about entry. Ironically, we do not expect to enter a team into the Killane Cup this years. Instead…
The committee have also decided to enter two teams into the newly created William Brennan Cup. This is a knock-out team competition for players rated below 1500 only. We hope to enter a team composed of O’Hanlon players (captained by James Osbourne) and one of other players (we are hoping for mainly Heidenfeld players…) captained by either John Maher or Peter Bishop. Please contact any of the above if you want to play.
The Blitz competition reaches the second round this Thursday, 12th March. The third round is scheduled for Tuesday 24th March. All players are welcome, even if they haven’t previously played in the first round.
The dates for the Rathmines Club Championship have been decided. Play will start on Tuesday 21st April and continue for six weeks until 26th May. The rating bands are: Senior 1500+; Intermediates 1200-1499; Juniors <1200. James Osbourne will control the Intermediates, Peter Bishop the juniors. (No controller chosed for seniors as yet). Results will be submitted for rating purposes.
The Irish National Club Championships are happening on the weekend of April 25th/26th. Details from the ICU website:
This year’s National Club Championships will be held in the Carlton Shearwater Hotel in Ballinasloe on Saturday 25th (1:00pm start) and Sunday 26th April. The Hotel are offering special rates for players – €65 per person sharing. All Clubs in Ireland are invited to participate provided their team of 6 boards has an average rating on this January’s ICU list of 1600 or more and, of course, they are all members of the ICU.
The club are entering one team only, of 6 boards, with a possibility of two substitutes. To participate, please contact Jack Killane directlyon 4902099 (H) or talk to him on a club night. We will choose the best team available. The top two teams from the National Club Championships normally gain entry to the European Club Championships – so there’s an incentive to enter a strong team!
The final day of the Leinster leagues were held on Sunday 8th March. The Heidenfeld team survived! The Rathmines A team finished with a 4-4 draw against Elm Mount to end the season 4th, just above Bray/Greystones and Gonzaga. Actually, we could well have converted a couple of draws into wins and won the match 5-3, to just pip Elm Mount for 3rd place, but in the end a 4th place finish was OK. Rathmines B were relegated.

Apologies, but Jack gave me these results, which I mislaid. Here is the link to the Leinster League site: we scored a 5-3 win over Gonzaga. Unfortunately, Mindaugaus lost, thus ending his chances of a board prize on the second last hurdle. Darren scored a win which he has promised to annotate for me! And John Delaney, our newest recruit, scored another fine win on board one.
The final round is this Sunday at 3pm, in St Michaels Community Centre, Inchicore.
