Kieran Cranny RIP

It was with great sadness that we learned of the passing away of Kieran Cranny this Saturday, July 25th. Kieran, vice-president of the club, is our longest-standing member, having joined in 1963/64. He will be remembered fondly by everyone he came in contact with in the club. He was President from 1979-1982 inclusive, but that only hints at his overall contribution. A fuller posting about Kieran’s contributions to the club over many years will be arranged soon. Kieran was 88.

Team B almost threw away the competition. Going into the final round, they were sitting on 7.5 points, 2.5 points ahead of Team E on 5 points. Michael lost a tactical game against Tony when he hastily snatched a piece, leaving his king in the middle of the board and allowing a quick mating attack. Peter Bishop lost to the new junior champion, Una O’Boyle. But Peter Cooke’s win on board 3 was enough to see them win overall in the end.
