LATE NEWS!! Blitz cancelled due to blizzard

Sorry everyone for short notice, but Michael Kennedy, club president, has called off tonight’s blitz. Dublin has started experiencing heavy snowfalls over the last hour or so. I hope my earlier notice about the blitz has not caught anyone off-guard! But this was sudden and, err, unexpected. We’ll probably try and re-arrange in the new year.

The club will now be closed and will reopen on January 3rd, 2011. Merry Christmas!

Captain Rathmines BEA A Team

The most recent matches have been against Portmarnock and Rathmines B Teams. As at year end, we’re currently on 11.5 points and I’d say around mid table but that’s only a guess – other results need to be added to the website. Our next game as you’re probably aware is an away game against Ballinasloe on Saturday the 8th of January. Note that this game is scheduled to take place in Athlone Institute of Technology but I’ll confirm exact details closer to the time.

If any of you cannot make this game, can you please let me know as soon as possible. I suggested to Pat that we organise some sort of Car Pooling for the Ballinasloe game as it might make more sense to just have one or two cars rather than four cars all going on the same journey – please let me know what you think.

Anyway that’s about it for the time being, if anyone has any questions/amendments for the results screenshot below, please let me know as I’m mailing this list to the controller for posting to the website in the next day or so..

Well that’s all I can think of for now, many thanks to you all for your efforts so far this year and Please God, we’ll get a good set of results in the next half of the Season.

Darren’s talk postponed

Unfortunately, Thursday’s chess talk with Darren McCabe will not go ahead due to the fact that one of Darren’s exams has been resheduled for the following morning at late notice .  Don’t fret – we’re only postponing it a few weeks until January (date to be agreed).  Darren is rarin’ to go with the talk as it’s already fully prepared just waiting for him to deliver.  Apologies for any inconvenience.

BTW the Blitz is still on next Monday.  I hope to see you all there!

…due to adverse weather conditions. Will be played sometime in the new year.

Dates for your diary

1. The Annual Christmas Blitz tournament will take place in the club on Monday, 20th December, 2010, at 8pm.  All members welcome.  Free entry.  As usual, it´s sure to be great fun with generous prizes of wine, chocs, etc. up for grabs for players of all standards.  Note that this will be the last club night of the year, as we will be shut right through the Xmas/New Year period.  Further details to follow.

2. Following the huge success of the chess talks given by FM John Delaney, I am delighted to announce another lecture.  This time it will be presented by Darren McCabe in the club on Thursday, 16th December, 2010, at 8pm. The topic will be the underrated Centre Game (1. e4 e5 2. d4 ed 3. Qxd4). All members are invited to attend.  There will be a nominal charge of €2 for this talk, but further donations are welcome. All proceeds will again go towards the our new Junior chess club which is up and running in Kenilworth Bowling Club on Grosvenor Square and meets every Wednesday evening. For those of you who don´t know Darren, with a FIDE rating over 2000, he´s a talented up-and-coming young player on the club´s top team and an openings expert.
