Rathmines Chess Club
Established in 1888, Rathmines Chess Club is one of Dublin’s oldest, biggest, and most successful chess clubs. We are the reigning Armstrong Cup winners (2011-2012), the division 1 of the Leinster leagues.
We also won the division 1 of the Leinster Leagues (The Armstrong Cup) over two recent years (2005-06 and 2006-07). We represented Ireland in the European Club Cup in October 2007, in Turkey. We also won the division 2 (Heidenfeld) title in 2006-07 and came second in 2010. We won the division 4 title (the O’Hanlon) in 2010. In 2011 we came first and second in the Ennis, 3rd division (the ‘B’ team ahead of the ‘A’ team!). Rathmines won the Branagan Cup in 2010 with a hard-fought win over Phibsboro. We were runners-up in the Branagan Cup 2009.
We have players at every level, from 2200+ down to ungraded beginners, and in 2011-2012 we have FOUR teams (more than any other club) competing across the top two Leinster leagues - two in the Armstrong (1st division) and two in the Heidenfeld (2nd). (Hence, we have 32 places for strong chess players!) We have two other teams in the BEA (5th), and another in the Bodley (6th). We have a policy of making sure every player gets a league place, so you’ll be sure to be fitted in!
New Members
The club welcomes all chess players, whatever your standard. You’ll always get a friendly welcome. We welcome complete novices who want to learn more about chess or casual players who just want some off-hand games. But we are also eager to recruit rated players, of any level, wanting to play in the top chess leagues in Leinster.
The club meets in the Rathgar Parish Center (downstairs, 52 Grosvenor Road, Rathgar, Dublin 6.) on Monday and Thursday nights from 7:30pm till 11:00pm. Ring the doorbell #1 to get someone to buzz you in.

Junior Club
Rathmines Chess Club now have a Junior division. Check out their website on www.rathminesjuniorchessclub.wordpress.com.
It takes place on a Wednesday night, from 7pm until 8.30pm, in Kenilworth Bowling Club in Grosvenor Square. This venue is not the same as the regular Rathmines club venue, on Grosvenor Road! (note: Nor is the bowling club in Zimbabwe, as incorrectly reported before…!)
The cost is 5 euro per night. First night is free. Chess sets are provided and we will also run some small tournaments with prizes. If anyone would like to join, they can give Maura Osborne a call at 0858452008 or 4929152, or just pop down to the Junior club on Wednesday.
