About and New Members Information
Rathmines Chess Club
Established in 1888, Rathmines Chess Club is one of Dublin’s oldest and biggest chess clubs.
We won the division 1 of the Leinster Leagues (The Armstrong Cup) over two recent years (2005-06 and 2006-07). We represented Ireland in the European Club Cup in October 2007, in Turkey. We also won the division 2 (Heidenfeld) title in 2006-07. In 2007-2008, we ended in 3rd place in the Armstrong for the A team and a comfortable mid-table position for the B team. In 2008-2009 the A team ended in a credible 4th place after leading the league before Christmas. The B team were relegated.
We have players at every level, from 2200+ down to ungraded beginners, and in 2008-2009 we had five teams competing across all the Leinster leagues – two in the Armstrong (1st division), one in the Heidenfeld (2nd), one in the O’Hanlon (4th), and one in the BEA (5th).
New Members
The club welcomes all chess players, whatever your standard. You’ll always get a friendly welcome. We welcome complete novices who want to learn more about chess or casual players who just want some off-hand games. But we are also eager to recruit rated players, of any level, wanting to play in the top chess leagues in Leinster.
The club meets in the Rathgar Parish Center (downstairs, 52 Grosvenor Road, Rathgar, Dublin 6.) on Monday (from 21st September 2009) and Thursday nights from 7:30pm till 11:00pm. The club rooms are indicated on the map by the red knight symbol. Note: Until Sept. 21st, we’ll meet upstairs on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
