Killian 1/2 – 1/2 Gerard MacElligot

Rathmines again went undefeated on every board as they recorded a 5.5 to 2.5 win over Elm Mount’s finest. The result was sealed at the death when Manuel, superstar, beat David Fitzsimons on board 1. There were wins too for Darren and Tony, with all other games being drawn.
The result was tighter than the final result suggests. Certainly, Leon was in a losing position for most of his game, Manuel was worse out of the opening, and Tony was in a very complex game that could have gone either way. But as in soccer, where a game lasts 90 minutes, chess requires concentration over all phases, and all three were able to capitalise on mistakes from our opponents.
Well done to the team, who now head into the New Year top of the table.
Rathmines actually has two Armstrong teams this year, and the other one is also doing quite nicely, thank you very much 😉
Correct. All the Rathmines teams always do us proud – we’ve had wins in the Heidenfeld & Ennis in recent years, and consistently have at least 2 teams in the Armstrong. The fact that the A team is doing well doesn’t take away from the other teams. John, send me an email about the B team’s best achievements/results/games and I will happily publish.
we had a nice 4.5-3.5 win over Gonzaga last week. David Goggins had a particularly tasty win over John Healy. You might be immodest enough to supply the moves, David?
That’s a brilliant result! Gonzaga are no slouches, as their 2nd place in the league testifies. And it is a huge result for the A team too, as it takes points off a close rival for the title. I’d love to see David’s game.
Actually, I think you meant St Benildus John! I am looking at the league table now and it was them, not Gonzaga, you beat. A good result nevertheless, but not as exciting as I initially thought.
oh cr*p – of course i do, sorry
